After graduating from the University of Cape Town’s dance department, Richard Glasstone worked internationally as a dancer, choreographer and ballet teacher. He was resident choreographer and principal teacher to the Turkish State Ballet in Ankara from 1965 to 1969 before Dame Ninette de Valois invited him to join the faculty of London's Royal Ballet School. During his 18 years there he held the posts of senior ballet teacher for boys and director of the dance composition course. Glasstone then went on to teach ballet and lecture on dance history at London's Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. He has written several books on ballet and has contributed articles to the International Encyclopedia of Dance and the International Dictionary of Ballet, as well as writing extensively for publications such as the Dancing Times and Dance Now. Glasstone was awarded an MBE for his services to British Ballet. Richard is married to the designer Heather Magoon, and some examples of her work as well as those of their son, the composer Ben Glasstone, are included in the Epilogue of this book.
