The Story of Wivenhoe Cricket

From the first stirrings of cricket in the mid-eighteenth century to the rapid development of the last 30 years, cricket in Wivenhoe has been 250 years in the making. Along the way the club was born and died twice, used six different grounds, entered and re-entered league cricket on three separate occasions and survived two World Wars before becoming the club it is today. For such a small town, Wivenhoe and its cricketers seem to have more than their fair share of stories to tell and heroes to honour, and have made a surprising contribution to the development of the game beyond the parish boundaries. This is the story of how 'The Spirit of the Hoe' was born.
